Marsha Plafkin manufactured The Nu!Shu™ in 2009 thru KEDS on Zazzle. Her design plays on two words: The first word is "Nushu", a secret Chinese language developed by artists as an act of rebellion.
These inventors decried laws preventing women from learning to read. The second word is "Nu", Yiddish for “What!”, used to inquire — and to challenge.
This shoe incorporates these expressions: "Who would schlep that?", "Oy", "Wanna know what I think?", "Of course", and "Enough already!".
As of 2015, the United Nations reported that two-thirds of the world's illiterate population were women. Why should women and girls be disproportionately harmed in this way? And why should anyone be deprived of learning to read and write?
ART AS RESPONSA endorses all efforts to abolish modern slave industries of prostitution and pornography and applauds gender-critical activists who defend dignity and safety for females by refuting parallel attacks on actual women and girls.
